Antimicrobial Stewardship at Northwestern
Welcome to the Northwestern Medicine Antimicrobial Stewardship page.
Throughout the nation and the world, there is a growing awareness of the crisis of antimicrobial overuse and resistance. Both national and state-based governmental bodies are intensifying their focus on this complex problem. Health care institutions of diverse types are at various stages of forming or strengthening their own stewardship programs. For more than a decade, Northwestern Memorial Hospital has become a source of leadership and innovation in the field of antimicrobial stewardship. This website provides stewardship education and guidelines to a wide audience of health professionals, fulfilling a timely need.
The mission of our multidisciplinary team is “… to improve patient safety by designing and implementing evidence-based clinician decision support, education, and policy. Our research efforts aim to deepen our understanding of how to use antimicrobials judiciously in an environment of growing antimicrobial resistance, few new antimicrobials, and economic pressures.” A major part of our work is to develop antimicrobial clinical pathways and dosing guidelines for a host of infectious conditions; such information could be useful to institutions throughout the world.
Of note, we recently joined with the Society of Hospital Epidemiology of America (SHEA) to lead the Antimicrobial Stewardship listserv. Clinicians who wish to join our listserv may reach us through the contact information above.
